India is building an open database that would be soon accessible to global drug regulators and stakeholders following the issue of fake drugs from the country. The barcoding system on medicines has earlier established by the government to understand the source of the drugs exported. It will be started as a pilot project by adding few selected exporters data, and experts will make a track and trace system within four months. “Medical exporters have come forward to upload the data in the central server. Sun Pharma, Wockhardt and Unichem are amongst them and talks are going on with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Mylan Labs, Sandoz and Aurobindo Pharma to participate in the pilot project” said PV Appaji, director general of Indian Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council. The expert group comprises of some industry tops, including Appaji as member secretary, Sudhanshu Pandey – the commerce ministry’s joint secretary, Sudhansh Pant – pharmaceuticals department’s joint secretary and the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). The president of Indian Drug Manufacturers, Veeramani said “India is the first country to implement barcode system in the world. The industry players seek clarity on the technologies for uploading their manufacturing data and security measures”
