The draft National Medical Device Policy (NMDP) 2015 has been welcomed by the medical device industry which will reflect on the growth of medical device market in India. (Read Also: Statistics & Figures: Medical Device Registration India). The CDSCO is responsible for the registration of medical devices in India. The setting up of autonomous body ‘National Medical Device Authority’ (NMDA) was also given credit by the experts. Rajiv Nath, forum coordinator of AIMED expressed his relief over the move and informed it seems Make in India campaign is not just a slogan. The draft has been made as a favorable one to the domestic industry growth and in the same road of AIMED recommendations. We are waiting for the implementation of the final policy so that the we can finally start developing domestic market”.
The DoP (Department of Pharmaceuticals) released the draft on June 3 2015, keeping the long term demands of medical device industry in mind. It would not only strengthen Make in India campaign and also make medical device industry a strong base. On the another on-going issue of price control of medical devices, AIMED has recommended the government should focus on implementing the existing rules first before starting to work on new rules. “Price control is an important aspect to deal with, but it shouldn’t scare the investors. To start with, the government should follow the provisions under the Consumer Act. We can implement 1% tax on MRP value rather the existing 6% excise duty. The sector should be capped by implementing the theses measures to afford consumer satisfaction.” Rajiv Nath added. (Read Also: Entry Strategies for Foreign Investors in India).
